Your IP65 Display Can Still Fail. Here's Why.

Most outdoor display failures have little to do with the IP rating itself.


Last year, two customers contacted us with almost the same question.

Both had installed IP65 outdoor displays.

One screen had been running without interruption for more than three years.

The other developed condensation inside the enclosure before its first summer ended.

At first glance, the products looked almost identical.

They even shared the same IP rating.

The real difference wasn't printed on the specification sheet.


An IP Rating Only Describes Part of the Product

It's easy to assume that an IP65 label tells you everything about outdoor protection.

In reality, it doesn't.

An IP rating measures how well the enclosure resists dust and water under defined test conditions. It doesn't evaluate how the display is installed, how heat escapes from the cabinet or whether rainwater can collect around cable entries.

Those details don't appear in a brochure.

They appear after the display has been operating outdoors for months.

One thing we've noticed over the years is that buyers often spend more time comparing IP ratings than discussing where the display will actually be installed.

That's understandable.

It's also why projects with similar specifications can end up performing very differently.

The Problems Usually Start Somewhere You Can't See

Rain rarely enters through the front glass.

More often, the trouble begins elsewhere.

We've seen cable glands left unsealed after installation. We've seen ventilation openings blocked to "improve waterproofing". We've even seen displays mounted too close to a wall, leaving almost no room for air circulation.

None of those problems were caused by the IP65 enclosure.

They were installation issues.

That's why experienced installers pay just as much attention to cable routing, drainage and ventilation as they do to the display itself.

A good outdoor installation isn't just about keeping water out.

It's also about allowing heat to escape.


Heat Is Often a Bigger Enemy Than Rain

Ask most people what damages an outdoor display and they'll probably say rain.

We'd probably say heat.

Electronic components don't like high temperatures. Neither do LCD panels.

During summer, the temperature inside an outdoor enclosure can rise much faster than many buyers expect, especially if airflow is restricted.

That's one reason commercial outdoor displays use active cooling systems instead of relying only on sealed cabinets.

Higher brightness, longer operating hours and direct afternoon sunlight all increase thermal stress.

They simply help the display achieve the lifespan it was designed for.

We've found that the most reliable outdoor installations aren't always the most expensive ones.

They're usually the ones where somebody paid attention to the details before the display was switched on.

"If two displays are both IP65, should they perform the same?"

Not necessarily. Product design, cooling, installation quality and maintenance all influence long-term reliability.

"Should we choose IP66 instead of IP65?"

Only if the installation environment genuinely requires it. A higher IP rating doesn't automatically solve problems caused by poor airflow or incorrect installation.

"What's the first thing you ask before recommending an outdoor display?"

Usually, it's not the IP rating.

It's a photo of the installation site.

Seeing the surrounding environment often tells us more than a specification sheet ever could.


An IP rating is an important specification, but it's only one piece of the picture.

The displays that stay reliable year after year usually have something in common: sensible installation, good airflow and routine maintenance.
