A 5,000-Nit Outdoor Display Isn't Always Worth Paying For

The enquiry looked straightforward.

A customer was planning to install a 55-inch outdoor display outside a supermarket and asked us to quote a 5,000-nit model. Another supplier had already recommended the same specification, so the decision seemed almost made.

Before preparing the quotation, we asked for one more thing—a few photos of the installation site.

The reply changed everything.

The screen wasn't going on an exposed exterior wall. It was going beneath a deep entrance canopy that blocked direct sunlight for most of the day. Customers would be standing only a few metres away, reading promotional offers before walking into the store.

At that point, recommending a 5,000-nit display no longer made much sense. A 3,000-nit screen would deliver virtually the same viewing experience while reducing equipment cost, power consumption and heat generation.

That conversation isn't unusual. It happens far more often than people expect.


The Specification Sheet Rarely Tells the Whole Story

When buyers compare outdoor displays, brightness is usually one of the first numbers they notice.

It's easy to understand why. Higher numbers sound like better performance.

In practice, brightness only becomes meaningful when you know where the display will be used.

Think about these two projects.

One screen is mounted beside a motorway, exposed to direct afternoon sunlight with traffic passing at high speed.

The other sits outside a pharmacy, protected by the building's entrance and viewed from two or three metres away.

Both are outdoor installations.

Neither should automatically receive the same recommendation.

The Installation Photos Usually Answer the Biggest Questions

One habit we've developed over the years is asking customers to send installation photos before talking about brightness.

Those photos often reveal details that never appear in an RFQ.

Is the screen facing east or west?

Will nearby buildings create shade during the afternoon?

Is there a canopy above the entrance?

How close will people stand to the display?

Small details like these often influence the recommendation more than another 1,000 nits on the specification sheet.

We've even seen projects where two suppliers quoted completely different brightness levels simply because each imagined a different installation environment.

Neither quotation was necessarily wrong.

They were based on different assumptions.


More Brightness Also Means More Than a Higher Price

Many buyers focus on the purchase price.

Fewer think about what happens over the next five years.

A brighter panel usually produces more heat. More heat requires a stronger cooling system. Higher power consumption follows naturally, especially when the display operates every day.

If those extra nits don't noticeably improve visibility, the additional investment is difficult to justify.

That doesn't mean 5,000 nits is excessive.
